What’s on your needles this month?
I finally picked up my mitten pattern again. The pattern will include directions for both 2 color instarsia knit flat and 1 color knit in the round. I haven’t gotten it perfect though, so I’m knitting even more test knits. I have knit SO MANY PAIRS of this pattern it’s stupid, but I refuse to release it until I’m happy that it’s where it needs to be.
Here are some of the pairs I’ve whipped up.
You’ve seen that red pair if you’re following me on Instagram.
I was so frustrated after knitting the red pair that I decided to take a break and start work on a shawl pattern just for me. Can’t even remember the last time I knit someone else’s pattern just for fun.
I tried knitting Good Day Sunshine by Amanda Bjoerge because it is just sublimely gorgeous. My first yarn was Parisienne by Colinette and it was a disaster, so I frogged it and decided to finally whip out my Serenity by Deborah Norville, which I’ve been wanting to use forever.
Attempt 2: I cast on my first attempt with that pattern and found that I was basically knitting a yarn nipple. Frogged.
Attempt 3: Modified the pattern to start with the first section instead of her set-up to see if that minimized the lump. Nope. It sawed the top off but didn’t fix it. Frogged.
Attempt 4: Cast on with 7s this time and modified the pattern to start right into Row 5 of the first section. Didn’t help. Frogged.
Attempt 5: Modified the pattern to start halfway through the first section. Didn’t help. Frogged.
The only way I can think to un-nipple it is to increase more on each row, but that would increase the overall size of the shawl and I’d probably run out of yarn.
The bad new is that I was so frustrated with all the frogging that I abandoned the pattern.
The good news is that I was so frustrated I picked up my above mitten pattern again instead – that’s the green pair on the needles. There’s nothing like anger to motivate you sometimes.
Oh, speaking of shawl… I really wanted to work with that yarn (Deborah Norville Serenity – LOVE this colorway), so I did what any normal person does: I’m creating a pattern from scratch. Ugh. I want a knit while I read shawl that uses this yarn and needle combo just because I really like having it in my hands. Is that too much to ask?
No, it’s not. Looks like I’m on my way to a new pattern…
